Cutting waste through evidence-based power quality solutions backed by accurate and timely data, and expert advice.

Following a major capital investment across their heating and cooling systems, James Cook University engaged Hexeis to protect and optimise their valuable energy assets. Through the installation of power quality monitors, the University was not only able to drive dependable operations but also harness the power of real-time alerts to identify unexplained and persistent equipment outages. Supported by expert advice from our team, the University was able to quickly determine the root cause of the issues and leverage data to execute a timely and low cost-effective solution.

THE BRIEF

With electrical infrastructure becoming more sensitive to network disturbances, James Cook University wanted to install power quality monitors. Underpinned by their sustainability goals and desire to optimise the asset life of newly installed chillers, the University also wanted to improve operational efficiency and reduce unscheduled maintenance costs.

THE SOLUTION

The Hexeis team worked alongside James Cook University to install software analysis tools and real-time power quality meters. Delivering more than standard energy metering, our power quality monitoring technology provides reports to support:

• Reduction/elimination of excessive harmonics

• Mitigation of voltage sags/swells

• Integration of existing systems

• Real-time performance and monitoring

• Improved asset management

THE RESULTS

While the Hexeis team was installing the power quality monitors, the client was experiencing unexplained and persistent equipment outages. This resulted in ongoing technician callout fees and unsuccessful investigations and actions to eliminate the root cause. Once James Cook University had access to real-time data, they were able to link in with the Hexeis team, who helped solve the issue. This extension of Hexeis’ service included:

• Interpreting data to confirm that minor brownouts/ voltage sags were responsible for 80 per cent of faults the client was experiencing.

• Navigating conversations with Energy Queensland to confirm that voltage sag events were from their high voltage network, not the University campus, and unfortunately, they were unable to be fixed.

• Investigating and implementing a low-cost and viable solution to improve the voltage sag resilience of campus chillers, in consultation with the equipment supplier.

• Managing testing and quality control to ensure equipment efficiency and validation.

Not only did this Hexeis power quality solution improve the reliability of power and increase student comfort across the campus through optimised systems, but it also deferred unnecessary investment in unscheduled maintenance costs and reduced asset life.
